About MCVP

Violence Prevention in the Monadnock Region of New Hampshire

Our History

MCVP: Crisis & Prevention Center began as the Monadnock Services for Battered Women in 1978 to assist battered women in exploring options for living without violence. Within two years, the name was updated to Women’s Crisis Services of the Monadnock Region. We began to assist survivors of sexual assault in 1982, and established a 24-hour crisis line later that same year.

In July of 1999, our organization opened the first battered women’s shelter in the region. In August of 2002, shelter capacity was significantly expanded with the purchase of a four-bedroom handicap accessible building.

In August of 2003, the organization adopted the name Monadnock Center for Violence Prevention, Inc. Even with the name change, the group remains focused on assisting survivors of domestic and sexual violence through crisis intervention, peer support, court advocacy, safe housing, and referral to other services. However, the new name reflects the growing efforts to reduce the incidence and impact of domestic and sexual violence by advocating for public policies and providing education, awareness, and prevention programs.

The center now operates in KeeneNew Hampshire. We serve all of Cheshire County and 14 towns in western Hillsborough County. Our crisis hotline is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by staff and trained volunteer Crisis Intervention Workers. We offer crisis intervention and peer counseling in person and over the phone to victims of domestic and sexual violence in order to provide emotional support, information about choices and options, assistance with problem solving, develop safety plans, and make appropriate referrals. Self-help support groups are held weekly in Keene.
